Vehicle Diagnostics

Vehicle diagnostics is the process of using specialized tools to access a vehicle's onboard computer (ECU) to identify and diagnose problems in its engine, transmission, electrical systems, and other components.

Modern vehicles generate error codes that are stored in the ECU, and a diagnostic test involves connecting a scan tool to the vehicle to read these codes, which helps mechanics accurately identify the source of a malfunction and perform necessary repairs.

This process helps prevent larger issues and can help improve performance.

How it works

  • Computer and sensors: Vehicles are equipped with numerous sensors and a central computer that constantly monitors various systems.
  • Error codes: When a system operates outside its normal parameters, the ECU logs a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) related to the problem.
  • Diagnostic tools: We use a handheld diagnostic tool or specialized software to connect to the car's computer, often via a standard OBD-II port.
  • Code retrieval: The tool reads the stored DTCs, which tell the technician exactly where to start their investigation. Some tools can display real-time data from sensors as well.
  • Diagnosis and repair: The technician interprets the codes and uses their expertise to determine the root cause of the issue, rather than guessing, which saves time and money.
